Library News

Castle Hills Library is growing a literary pumpkin patch, and we need your help! Decorate a pumpkin to look like one of your favorite book characters, and bring it to the library to plant in our Literacy Pumpkin Patch!

No Carved or Cut Pumpkins Will Be Accepted

-  Think of your favorite book and design your pumpkin based on your favorite character from that book.

-  Purchase a pumpkin that is no larger in size than a basketball.

-  Gather your decorating supplies.  Acrylic paints or permanent markers work best.  Watercolors tend to run, and spray paint will gradually dissolve the pumpkin.  Other options include adding materials such as yarn, felt, buttons, wiggly eyes, etc.

Decorate your pumpkin without carving, cutting, or poking holes in it.

Fill out the entry page located at the bottom of this box.

-  Bring your pumpkin and entry page to the library on Tuesday, October 14th upon arrival to school.

Pumpkins are to be taken home at the end of school on Friday, October 31stIf your child needs assistance getting it home please make arrangements to do this.  All pumpkins that are left behind will be disposed of by 3:30 that afternoon.

-  Participation is completely voluntary.  This is not a contest, however each decorated pumpkin will earn the owner one spirit stick (limit one pumpkin per student).

-  Have fun and be creative!

Author Visit

Kate Klise, author of DYING TO MEET YOU, will be visiting Castle Hills on November 5th.  She and her sister, Sarah, have collaborated on many award winning books such as the 43 Old Cemetery Road series.  The first book in the series was one of our 2010-11 Bluebonnet nominees.  They also have another series called The Three Ring Rascals along with many other chapter and picture books.

Ms. Klise will be talking to K-2 students about how she and her sister began writing when they were very young.  With 3-5 students, she will discuss what makes a good story and why writing is really rewriting.

We will be preordering books for Ms. Klise to autograph.  Please watch for a flyer coming soon.  If you would like to visit their website, please go to to find out more about our author.
